searching for gold

One of my favorite things to do with Mark is to go to Jelly's to go through their records, CDs, and books. Jelly's is one of those gems of O‘ahu. You walk in and it's as quiet as a library with a record playing in the background of a band you've never heard but instantly like. The place smells of dust and the walls are lined with limited edition comics, records and posters. There are stacks of books piled high waiting to be checked-in and clear tape peeling up on all corners of the plastic dividers between records. Jelly's always has a treasure waiting for you, you just have to take the time to unearth it.

On this particular visit, I had just gone to a banquet the night before that my old employer throws every year. The headlining entertainment for the evening was the great Danny Couch, so I found myself in the Hawaiiana section to see if they had any of his albums when I saw this:

crack seed on the cover should = instant grammy

crack seed on the cover should = instant grammy

Seriously this album has a jar of crack seed on it?! Of course when I buy a record it's usually the album art that seals the deal, so I began searching through every record to see if any other albums had local treats on them and sure enough...

Mr. Frank DeLima comes through with his face superimposed on a malasada. You gotta love Hawai‘i. We take our snacks and food seriously. ;)
